- Make sure your fad is:
- Original. You don't want to start something that everybody is already doing; then you are just following along. Come up with something new and exciting, and people will catch on. Make sure your new thing is something you would like to do. Don't just make something up just to try and start a trend - imagine if it caught on, and then you didn't really want to do it? Also make sure your idea is quirky, the type of thing that makes people go "oh, yeah, what a great idea!" in their heads.
- Simple. If the trend you are trying to push is to complicated, then it won't catch on. People follow simple and cool things. Try using a familiar object for something new, say...using a belt as a bag strap. Or mix designs - remember a few years ago it was really uncool to wear spots with stripes? Now the top designers are mixing them on clothes, mugs, you name it! It's the little things that make it big.
- Affordable. If your trend is too expensive people will not follow either. They don't want to blow their money on something that is just a passing fad or trend. Try to keep it under $400.
- Ask these questions: Will people go with it? Will your school principal ban it? Will it fizzle out quickly? Really think about these things. Try and imagine your friends doing/wearing/saying your thing. Try to imagine the coolest people you know doing it too. Do they look/sound dumb? Or does it work? Cause it's the things that work when they were least expected to that are the biggest trends.
- Pick out your trend; exhibit confidence every time you wear, display, express, or execute your trend; and persist in exhibiting your trend. Use it frequently!
- Never announce that you are starting a trend. That will just make people think you're attention seeking or childish. To introduce a trend, show up one day wearing that accessory in an unusual place - and behave in a totally normal way. Don't act differently. Don't try to show it off. If you're starting a phrase trend then just slip it into conversation. Drawing attention to your trend is bad - you should make people wonder why they never saw or did or said it before, not give them a reason to keep not doing it! If you are nonchalant about your trend, you'll probably get a compliment or two from people who wish they'd thought of it first and respect you!
- Don't have all your friends try to coordinate and do it on the same day. Not only will this brand you as a group of weirdos if it fails, it will also detract from the coolness of your trend. Lots of people doing something new at once generally makes it a gag, not a revolution. In school, trend revolutions are started by individuals who dare to start them. Like you!
- If you all pop out with it at once, people won't think it's cool. You need your closest friends on board. Follow the above rules until people have caught on and think you're cool. If they believe you look or sound great, people outside your friendship group will notice too. And if your friends do it, they'll have their other close friends join up, and so on. A world revolution!
How to Be a Fashion Expert
- First and foremost learn about the history of fashion! There is no point not knowing why your clothes look like what thy do.
- Do not follow the trend. Seriously. Get real. I mean do you really want to do what other people are doing? Do you seriously want to be mini-me? I didn't think so. Create your own trend. Something that fits you perfectly, something that you would be proud to be the creator of. It could something totally out of this world or it could be like they dressed back then. Whatever you want. Be your own fashion designer.
- First you need to know all of the 'fashion lingo'. This will help and if you're talking about clothes you won't sound stupid. Try some fashion books or search it up the internet. Either way DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
- Create a totally cool outfit that looks and feels great. Use matching colors and patterns. When you buy your clothes make sure they fit. You don't want them too tight or too baggy. Also make sure they feel good. Don't buy them if they make you itchy or very uncomfortable. Make sure that you feel confident in the clothes. If all the requirments are good then buy it!
- Create your own super special fashion journal. Cut out clothes or styles that you like and paste them into your fashion journal. Write down a couple of your favorite outfits and say how you feel in them.
- Add accessories. From beads to earrings or rings to bracelets. You can add color and spunk to any outfit with accessories. Make sure that they match and they don't feel uncomfortable.
- Search Through Your Own Closet First. A person never knows what they truly have until they take a good look into their own closet. You may have outfits that can be totally revamped for the sake of fashion. A good tailor would be key in this situation because you have things refitted for the new style you are trying to achieve. What you are looking for could be right under your nose!
- Do not spend tons of money of one item of clothing. You could always find something very similar to it for less money! The thrift store has many different stuff too.
- Wear an outfit totally different then anybody else would. Mix match patterns and colors or maybe try leggings and a long shirt. Whatever it is make sure people would want to follow that trend. But don't make them.
- Make yourself a reputation as a trendsetter. Shop at the local designer stores; even if you're not that rich, there must be something in there you afford (example: a pair of gloves, sunglasses). Be a devoted client to these boutiques and you will get noticed for your style.
